Saturday June 1, 2024 | 1:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
7206 National Seashore Ln, Berlin, MD 21811
Treat your inner Thoreau to this immersive workshop designed to help you craft the written word to communicate your experiences more effectively. With Mark’s guidance, participants will enjoy meditative exploration of Assateague’s ecosystems in tandem with writing exercises to describe your personal sense of belonging to the natural world. You will come away with techniques to hone your writing skills that will improve your preferred method of communication through mediums like a nature blog or journal, fiction and prose, social media content or in Mark’s case, Conservation Journalism. The focus will be on the sense of wonderment in an experience then how to richly describe it and turn it into something poetic and meaningful. Through your own raw, personal relationship with nature you will put the emotion back in creative work, capture the immediacy of the moment, and produce true entries of nature storytelling.
Materials:
— notebook, pens, pencils
— cell phone or point and shoot camera
— Hat, water bottle, sunscreen, insect repellent
— We want you to be unencumbered by your gear! This is not a photography workshop, and photography is not the focus of the workshop, but photo reference is an important part of the process. We encourage participants to write by hand but please use whatever method is most accessible to you (type or talk to text). Keep in mind it is not easy to view electronic screens to type in an outdoor environment.
