Introduction to Oil Painting with Jon Bandish
4 Week – Introduction to Oil Painting
Monday, January 5, 5:00 – 7:00
Monday, January 12, 5:00 – 7:00
Monday, January 19, 5:00 – 7:00
Monday, January 26, 5:00-7:00
Cost: $120.00 member $144 non-member (equivalent to $30/class member or $36/class non member per night)
In this class, students will develop an understanding of basic oil painting and will have an introduction
into basic color theory.
This class is designed to elevate students’ fears surrounding oil painting as well as demystifying the
aura of oil painting with several specific lessons. Each lessons offers a balance of how to use simple
color pallets, tips for how to mix and apply paint, and best of all a finished painting at the end of each
class.
The introduction to oil painting will make anyone less fearful of oil paint and more excited to learn
and grow with the practice. The materials used in this class are basic and will not be at great a cost,
so the students can rest easy. I guarantee to make oil painting fun for anyone!
Supplies
Intro to Oil Painting
Course Materials
Basic Set of Oil Paints are enough to get started. These can be found at Michaels and Hobby Lobby
If interested in specific colors a prismatic/earth tone, or warm/cool of each color is recommended.
Blues: Cobalt and Cerulean
Greens: Sap and Viridian
Reds: Cad Red and Indian Red
Yellows: Cad Yellow and Yellow Ochre
Oranges: Cad Orange and Burnt Sienna
Titanium White is a good all around white, zink is ok as well.
Lamp Black is the best black, black is used sparingly though
Other color suggestions are not necessary to start with but depends on what students interests are
include Dioxane Purple, Raw Umber, Indigo, Pthalo Turquoise, and Cobalt Turquoise.
Brushes: A large and small of each type is recommended to start with. A 2 and a 8 for an example as
far as sizes. Types of brushes include round, flat, and filbert. Other brushes can be recommended for
later uses.
Pallet Knifes are highly recommended for proper color mixing techniques. My personal preference is
the spade shape, but any knife will work.
Pallet surface to work on would be a piece of plexiglass or small piece of glass are highly
recommended. Alternatives include throwaway plastic sheets found at Michaels or Hobby Lobby.
Any odorless solvent works for brush cleaning. Plentiful amount of rags for cleaning are
recommended. Gloves are recommended as well.
