Thomas E. Polk Sr., born June 11, 1860 in Allen, MD, was a Buffalo Soldier, serving in the United States 9th Cavalry Regiment Company C, from 1882 until 1892. During these ten years, he and other Buffalo Soldiers fought in the several “Indian Wars” against the indigenous populations of the American West in part of America’s westward expansion of the late 19th century. While their involvement and the conquest in general is controversial, these Black soldiers played an important role in American history following the end of the American Civil War.
