The Saint Martin’s Church in Showell, Maryland, is a unique piece of Worcester County heritage. The structure was built in 1744 and served as the official “church of state” for those living nearby. By the 1840’s nearby residents moved closer to the bustling town of Berlin and switched to the parish there. For awhile St Martin’s Church continued to be used for special events. But, it fell into disrepair and then became a hangout for local teenagers.
Now it has been restored and this charming jewel can be toured or rented for special events. Weddings are especially popular. Often couples will take their vows in the church and hold a catered reception in a beautifully appointed tent there on the grounds.
St. Martin’s Church serves as a museum, open to the public on a regular basis.Open House docents tours are held every Monday from June to October 11:00 to 2:00PM or by appointment.
