Although born free, Tindley faced many challenges. His father had been enslaved and his mother, according to sources, died while Tindley was young. He also received no formal education, but that did not deter Tindley from teaching himself how to read “from bits of newspapers and without any teacher until I could read the Bible almost without stopping to spell the words.” Through his own perseverance, Reverend Dr. Charles Albert Tindley became one of the most influential ministers and gospel composers in American history. The Calvin B.
